The word “stereotype” comes from printing. Literally, it means “solid impression.”
Because metal type is expensive, you try to be as careful with the letters as possible. So if you have to print a lot of something, instead of running the risk of damaging your original, you could make a metal cast of the original and print from that instead. It’s a lot like “making a copy of a copy.” It’s also really useful if you have something that gets printed regularly without many changes. Stereotypes free up the letters for other jobs, and they’re easy to make again if they get ruined.
The word “cliché” means the same thing as stereotype—except cliché was originally an onomatopoeic word that described the sound of the stereotype being cast.
